Two soapbox Racers built by Royal Mint staff, Boccard staff and Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School impressed at this summer’s Downhill Derby in Penarth, with one of them claiming second prize in the competition.

Royal Mint apprentices and engineers worked with the school to build ‘Mushroom Muncher’ – an homage to Mario Kart. Boccard engineers collaborated with the school to build ‘Holy Poachers’ – a soapbox Bat Mobile!

This is the second year that Royal Mint has be involved in the event, where amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles down the hill towards the esplanade in Penarth, and Boccard was honoured to take part with them this year. Each hand-made vehicle in non-motorised and reliant upon the force of gravity and skill for propulsion, making it a thrilling spectacle.

Boccard Engineer Larry Cattle stated:

“I was approached and asked if we would be interested in making a go-kart for a local school by the Royal Mint, so I thought it would a great opportunity to work closely with the local community and build on relations with the client. I managed to persuade a couple of other local companies to give me some materials for the project which was a great help. I was then given a sketch by the pupils from the school and set to work trying to design something that would fit their plans. After some hard work, Len Williams, Allan Thomas, and myself created the Bat Mobile, which I am told was loved by all at the school. Not sure of the final position of the Bat Mobile in the race as I think it just took off and flew away…”
